When this article comes out it will be just a few days before the 4th of July. So it seemed appropriate to give a little history about our great flag.

In June of 1777 the Continental Congress adopted the following resolution:
Resolved: that the flag of the United State be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field. Because this was so vague, for the next 135 years there were 24 changes in the American flag, but all flags whatever the design, are valid and may be flown.

Did you know that our flag was once called “Old Glory”? The term was coined by shipmaster Capt. Stephen Driver in 1831 when friends gave him a 24 star flag. As the flag opened to the ocean breeze, he exclaimed “Old Glory!!”

In 1837 he retired and took his flag home to Nashville. During the Civil War the rebels tried to find his flag and destroy it as it had flown over the capitol building a number of times. In 1862 when the Union forces captured Nashville, they raised a small flag. Immediately people wanted to know if Capt. Driver’s flag still existed. Driver went home and ripped at the seams of his bedcover to reveal his original Old Glory. He gently gather up the flag and returned to the capitol. He climbed the tower and replaced the small flag with his. Captain Driver’s grave is one of three places authorized by an act of Congress where a flag may be flown 24 hours a day.

I haven’t tried today’s recipe yet, but plan on it for the 4th.

Wave Your Flag Cake

Serves 18
Preparation time 20 minutes
Total Time 4 hours 25 minutes

1 quart strawberries (about 4 cups), divided
1 ˝ cups boiling water
1 8 serving pkg. Or 2 4 serving size red Jello (I like wild strawberry)
Ice cubes
1 cup cold water
1 pkg ( 12 oz) pound cake, cut into 10 slices
1 1/3 cups blueberries, divided
1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed

Slice 1 cup of the strawberries; set aside. Halve remaining strawberries; set aside.
Stir boiling water into dry gelatin mix in large bowl 2 minutes until complete dissolved. Add enough ice to cold water to measure 2 cups. Add to gelatin; stir until ice is melted. Refrigerate 5 minutes or until slightly thicken (consistency of unbeaten egg whites) Line bottom of 9x13 inch pan with cake slices. Add sliced strawberries and 1 cup of the blueberries to thickened gelatin; stir gently. Spoon over cake slices.
Refrigerate 4 hours or until firm. Spread whipped topping over gelatin. Arrange strawberry halves on whipped topping for “stripes” of “flag”. Arrange remaining 1/3 cup blueberries on whipped topping for “stars”. Store leftover cake in refrigerator. Enjoy! Have a wonderful 4th!!!
