Recently I was going through my mother’s recipe card file. It is always fun to check this file out and see some of the old recipes from childhood. One of the recipes I ran across and am sharing with you today is a candy one. I made it for our family and they liked it. My motto is “the easier, the better”. This one is really easy. It is a peanut cluster recipe. The only thing that I didn’t like was I thought the peanuts got a little soggy before all the candy was gone. However, maybe if you used nothing but shelled salted Spanish peanuts with the covering ( or whatever they call the brown papery like stuff) on that might prevent this from happening. However, if you eat really fast, won’t matter anyway.

Here is a little peanut trivia. Ancient Peruvians cultivated wild peanuts into domestic plants more than 3000 years ago. From Peru peanuts spread to Mexico, the Caribbean, Brazil, and other South American regions. Portuguese traders shipped them to Africa and China, where they became a very important crop.

Have you ever grown peanuts? I have and it was fun. They grow practically underground on the base of a bushy plant. It needs a long season though.

Do you know the places in the U.S. where you will see peanuts used for more than snacks are --nope, not at the circus or baseball game, but in Chinese, African, and Indian restaurants!!!!

Peanut Clusters

12 oz semi sweet chocolate chips
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 # salted peanuts

Combine chocolate chips, condensed milk in a heavy sauce pan. Place over very low heat until chocolate is melted. KEEP WELL BELOW THE BOILING POINT. Removed from heat and add vanilla and peanuts. Mix well and drop from teaspoon onto waxed paper. Let stand 12 hours to harden. Enjoy!!
